Gate times
In the club match information we checked, the gates opened two hours before kick-off, both at the Maracanã and at the Estádio Nilton Santos. At Fluminense home games the gates close at the start of the second half; after that the police can refuse entry, and the ticket is not refunded. Kick-off times are set late and can move, so check the time again on the day.
What the law asks at the entrance
Article 158 of the General Sports Law lists the conditions for getting in and staying in a Brazilian stadium, whatever kind of ticket you hold:
- a valid ticket and, for anyone over 16, a completed biometric registration
- agreeing to a security search
- no objects that could be used for violence, and no fireworks or flares
- no throwing of objects and no entering the pitch area
- no banners or chants that are racist, homophobic, sexist or xenophobic
- not drunk and not under the influence of drugs
Fluminense adds that food and drinks cannot be brought into the Maracanã. Anyone who breaks the rules can be refused entry or removed.

A sector, not a seat
Clubs sell the stadium by sector, and inside the sector seating is usually free. One traveller on the Tour da bola visit wrote that the group did not even sit together; another, on the ABSOLUT Sport visit, had a dedicated section on the long side. If sitting with your group matters, arrive with the guide rather than on your own, and ask the agency where its sector is.
The way back
On a Fluminense night in May 2026 the city banned parking on several streets around the Maracanã from the morning until after midnight. Vans and buses therefore stop where traffic allows, and one Gray Line reviewer had to walk seven minutes to reach the van. After the final whistle the whole crowd leaves at once. Agree the meeting point for the return with your guide before the game, and keep the agency’s phone number on your phone.
A morning before an evening game
If your game is in the evening, the morning is yours. Our sister site favela-tours.com compares guided walks through Rio’s favelas, among them the Rocinha tour and the Tavares Bastos tour.
